A patent grants its owner an exclusive right to exploit an invention and prevent third parties from commercially exploiting or using it without their consent. Patents are generally granted for a period of 20 years from the filing date, and are subject to the payment of annuity fees each year to keep them in force. Utility models are generally granted for a period of ten years from the filing date and are also subject to the payment of annuity fees.
An industrial design protects the external appearance of a product in its entirety or partially resulting from its lines, contours, colours, shape, texture or materials of the product or its ornamentation.
An industrial design grants its owner an exclusive right to use it and prevent third parties from using it without their consent.
